HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Illinois is home to the second largest population of residents with Ukrainian ancestry in the United States, only behind New York state, with over 50,000 Ukrainian-Americans living in the Land of Lincoln; and

WHEREAS, Chicago's Ukrainian Village fosters a vibrant population of over 15,000 residents of Ukrainian descent in a community built on centuries of history; and

WHEREAS, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin launched a reckless and unnecessary full scale invasion on neighboring Ukraine on February 24, 2022 after years of tension and aggressive tactics along the border between the two countries; and

WHEREAS, State retirement funds invested in Russian assets support Vladimir Putin's economy and aid in his evil plan to wage war upon the Ukrainian people and the European continent; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we condemn Russia for its attack on the sovereign nation of Ukraine; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge the review and divestment of all funds invested by any State or local unit of government, including but not limited to investments made by the State Board of Investments and any state or local retirement funds that are directly or indirectly related to Russia, to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
