HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the City of Decatur for its
4rich history and preservation of historic homes and buildings;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Historic preservation is an effective tool for
7stimulating growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering
8local pride, and maintaining community character while
9enhancing livability; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Decatur is rich in historical elements of
11President Abraham Lincoln, including the site of his first
12Illinois home at the Lincoln Trail Homestead State Park &
13Memorial; it was Decatur where Lincoln was first nominated for
14the presidency at the State Republican Party Convention in
151860 and where he tried cases at the log courthouse known today
16as the Macon County History Museum; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Decatur is home to such iconic structures as the
18126 year-old Transfer House, the 1916 Avon Theatre, the 1929
19Masonic Temple, the 1916 Lincoln Square Theatre, the 1909
20Powers Mansion, the 1870s Governor Oglesby Mansion, the 1876
21James Millikin Homestead, and many more; and

1    WHEREAS, Decatur was also an important early center of
2rail commerce and operations for the Baltimore & Ohio,
3Pennsylvania, Wabash, Illinois Central, and Illinois Terminal
4Railroads; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Historic preservation is relevant for communities
6across the nation, both urban and rural, and for Americans of
7all ages, all walks of life, and all ethnic backgrounds; and
 
8    WHEREAS, History of the Heartland is a 501(c)(3)
9non-profit, which promotes historic preservation and the local
10history of Decatur; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we declare May 15 through May 21, 2022 as Historic
14Preservation Week for Decatur in the State of Illinois; and be
15it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That we recognize the City of Decatur for its
17rich history and preservation of historic homes and buildings,
18which make the city unique and provide links to understanding
19the city's pioneers and their descendants.
