SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Rev. Betty Anne Hornback of Pekin, who passed away on January 7, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Betty Hornback was born in Poughkeepsie, New York to William Amos Lovekin Parke and Marion Elizabeth (Nyborg) Parke on April 24, 1937; she married Junior Neal Scurlock in Pekin on April 1, 1956; she later married Richard Dean Hornback in Pekin on July 28, 1984; she graduated from Sangamon State University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and earned her Master of Arts in Human Development Counseling from the University of Illinois at Springfield in 1997; and

WHEREAS, Betty Hornback worked for the Methodist Medical Center in Peoria and Neurological Associates in Peoria, and then as the office manager/secretary for Arcadia Presbyterian Church in Peoria; in 1986, she became aware of a licensed ministry preparation program to train to be licensed for ministry in the United Church of Christ; she was the first candidate to enter this program in the Western Association in the Illinois Conference and became licensed on May 3, 1988; she was ordained in the United Church of Christ on June 8, 2001 and served congregations in Beardstown, Galesburg, Pekin, Paxton, Kewanee, Champaign, Mazon, Marseilles, and Chillicothe; and

WHEREAS, In 1999, Betty Hornback was one of three laywomen honored at the United Church of Christ's General Synod in Providence, Rhode Island for outstanding contributions to women's leadership development; she was honored in 2016 with the Chalice Award, recognizing her leadership and countless contributions to the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ; she was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Pekin; and

WHEREAS, Betty Hornback's interests included genealogy, writing, and reading light mysteries; she loved her family and was passionate about attending family activities; she was a special grandmother to her grandkids, and three granddaughters were named after her, as well as one daughter; she loved traveling, especially to Meriden, Connecticut, where she lived as a young child; she also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; and

WHEREAS, Betty Hornback was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents; and her brother, Peter Alan; and

WHEREAS, Betty Hornback is survived by her daughters, Cathy L. (Ralph) Brown, Rebecca Anne Scurlock Gould, and Sheila Sue (Patrick) Scurlock Miller; her son, Robert Neal (Valerie) Scurlock; her grandchildren, Shawna (Todd) Neihoff, Ronald Harris, Nicole (Josh) Rakes, Jesse Starry, Alan Tribe, Jayce Parrish, Gabriel Scurlock, Troy Scurlock, and Kaylee Scurlock; her great-grandchildren, Michael Davis, Samantha Davis, Alexandra Headley, Brantley Rakes, and Elayna Rakes; her great-great-grandchildren, Aubrii, Romeo, and Arianna Headley; her sister, Nancy Jane (Ernest) Finney; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Rev. Betty Anne Hornback and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Betty Hornback as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
