SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Buff Carmichael II of Springfield, who
4passed away on March 21, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Buff Carmichael was born to Buff and Leona
6Beatrice (Falkner) Carmichael in Waco, Texas on July 2, 1947;
7he graduated from the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service; he
8married Jerry Dean Bowman in Clinton on September 20, 2014;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Buff Carmichael first worked as a funeral
11director and embalmer in Texas; after moving to Springfield,
12he worked for the State of Illinois with the EMS and the
13Department of Nuclear Safety; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Buff Carmichael was the founder and a member of
15the Coalition of Rainbow Alliances (CORAL) and was
16instrumental in creating the AIDS Memorial at Lincoln Park; he
17was a board member and volunteer at the Fifth Street
18Renaissance SARA Center, a volunteer for Gay & Lesbian
19Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), and a huge supporter of Parents,
20Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG); he was also
21a local chapter board member of the American Civil Liberties
22Union (ACLU), a volunteer and youth mentor at the Phoenix

1Center, a volunteer at the Abraham Lincoln Museum, and a
2member of the Abraham Lincoln Unitarian Universalist
3Congregation; he and his husband created the Prairie Frame
4newspaper, which they coordinated for 12 years; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Buff Carmichael loved camping and sharing stories
6with anyone who would listen; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Buff Carmichael was preceded in death by his
8parents; his husband; and his sisters, Carol Carlsen and Nada
9Bell; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Buff Carmichael is survived by his children, Trey
11Carmichael, Janna Doyle, Erin Agee, and James Hunter
12Carmichael; his numerous grandchildren; his sister, Judy
13Lohmann; and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore,
14be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Buff Carmichael II and extend our sincere condolences to his
18family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Buff Carmichael as an expression of
