SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of John Philip O'Hara, who passed away on
4October 18, 2020 at the age of 87; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Phil O'Hara was born in Worcester, Massachusetts
6on May 17, 1933; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Phil O'Hara served in the U.S. Army in Korea for
8two years; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Phil O'Hara earned a bachelor's degree from Brown
10University in 1957; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Phil O'Hara began his career with the Follett
12Publishing Company in Chicago, where he worked his way to the
13position of publishing division president; eventually, he
14founded his own publishing company, JP O'Hara Inc., and one of
15the signature publications was titled Chicago on Foot; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Phil O'Hara returned to Brown University as the
17director of student activities; he founded the university's
18Mediation Project and retired at age 77; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Phil O'Hara's life of service also included

1affiliations with Chicago Youth Centers, the District 97 Board
2of Education, and Boy Scouts Troop 16; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Phil O'Hara founded the Oak Park Wednesday
4Journal; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Phil O'Hara was preceded in death by his parents,
6Katherine and Russell J. O'Hara; his brother, Frank O'Hara;
7and his daughter, Alison O'Hara Barasa; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Phil O'Hara is survived by his wife of 25 years,
9Patricia; his sister, Maurine; his children, Keith (Dena),
10Julie, and John (Amy); his stepsons, Michael and Will
11Weatherly; his 17 grandchildren; and his four
12great-granddaughters; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15John Philip O'Hara and extend our sincere condolences to his
16family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
17further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Phil O'Hara as an expression of our
20deepest sympathy.
