SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Ralph Schuler of River Forest, who
4passed away on July 13, 2021 at the age of 89; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler was born in Chicago to Ralph and
6Martha Schuler, who loved and pushed him; he adopted the same
7parenting style with his own children to great success; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler grew up in Oak Park on Lombard
9Avenue; he raised his five children in the same home; though he
10attended Fenwick High School, his children were students at
11Oak Park and River Forest High School; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler was a lifelong educator,
13specifically history; he began his teaching career at DePaul
14Academy and retired from East Leyden High School as the
15history department chairperson; he coached boys and girls
16tennis and was also a union steward; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Aside from tennis, which he played at the Oak
18Park Tennis Club, Ralph Schuler enjoyed reading poetry and
19literature; he wrote multiple free verse poems in Nags Head,
20North Carolina and was a dedicated member of the Old Bulls
21reading club; one of his favorite quotes was, "Don't let a few

1facts get in the way of a good story."; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler valued his friendships with Don
3Gancer and Terry McCarthy, who was the best man in his wedding;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler and his wife, Donna, ensured that
6their children were knowledgeable about history, recognized
7good music across genres, and ate food from different
8cultures; for a half-century, his children and grandchildren
9have traveled to Nags Head during the summer; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler was compassionate, humorous,
11hospitable, an advocate for civil rights, and a White Sox fan;
12the Sox won the last game that he attended in the 10th inning;
13and
 
14    WHEREAS, Ralph Schuler is survived by his loving wife,
15Donna; his sister, Jane Cutt; his children, Rich, Laura (John)
16Reardon, Bill, Stephen (Mary Jo), and Stacy (Eric) Wettstein;
17his grandchildren, Matt, Nate, and Ellen Schuler, Keith,
18Audrey, and Caroline Reardon, Andrea and Ryan Schuler, and
19Julia and Anna Wettstein; and his great-grandchild, Presley
20Reardon; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2Ralph Schuler and extend our sincere condolences to his
3family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
4further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Ralph Schuler as an expression of
7our deepest sympathy.
