SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of William D. "Bill" Gissel of Aledo, who passed away on May 4, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Bill Gissel was born to William A. and Genevieve (Permantier) Gissel in Chicago on June 14, 1947; he earned his bachelor's degree from St. Ambrose University; he received his commission in the U.S. Navy, and he immediately entered flight training, earning his wings and serving as a naval aviator, primarily flying H-3s; he served as a member of the Apollo 17 recovery team; he married Antoinette "Ann" Bauwens in Rock Island on December 27, 1969; and

WHEREAS, Bill Gissel had numerous interests and excelled at many things; he loved being in nature, whether riding his quad, gardening, doing yard work, or simply enjoying the outdoors; he was an avid reader and a student of history, and his vast expertise of the Civil War era was a culmination of extensive studies and exploration of countless battlefields; he was also a talented builder, spanning woodworking and remodeling to designing and creating structures; and

WHEREAS, Bill Gissel was known for his larger-than-life personality, always being ready with a good story or a joke, and his generous, welcoming nature; he loved spending time with his family and beloved dogs, whether he was at home, driving around the local area, or traveling; and

WHEREAS, Bill Gissel was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Thaddeus; and his sisters, Mary McChesney and Heidi Baker; and

WHEREAS, Bill Gissel is survived by his wife, Ann; his children, Will Gissel, Nicholas Gissel, and Sarah (Yon) Hafer; his grandchildren, Yvonne and Helen; and his siblings, Madeleine Bartsch, Susan (Aldo) Bon, and John (Carrie) Gissel; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of William D. "Bill" Gissel and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Bill Gissel as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
