SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of John Patrick "Pat" Kelly of Springfield, who passed away on July 23, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Pat Kelly was born to Joseph and Ellen Mahady Kelly in Springfield on September 17, 1935; he attended Cathedral Grade School and graduated from Cathedral Boys High School in 1953; he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed overseas during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, Pat Kelly worked as a plumber for 42 years, primarily in construction for A.J. Weiskopf & Sons and in construction and maintenance at the State Capitol Complex for the Illinois Secretary of State; he was a member of UA Local 137; and

WHEREAS, Pat Kelly was very proud of his Irish heritage and a fan of all things Irish, from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to Springfield's own Saint Patrick's Day Parade; he was a founding member of the local Ara's Army/Irish Mafia bus trips to South Bend, Indiana; he was given the Michael J. Howlett Award as Springfield's Irishman of the Year in 2009; he remains the namesake for the Irish public house J.P. Kelly's in downtown Springfield, which is owned by his daughter, Ellen; and

WHEREAS, Pat Kelly was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Winifred Gardner, Helen Todd, Josephine Lloyd, Isabelle Carey, Catherine Baker, Joseph Henry Kelly, Rita Roderick, and Alice Maureen Kelly; and

WHEREAS, Pat Kelly is survived by his wife, Norma McCullough Kelly; his children, Chris (Gae) Kelly, Maria Stacy, Dan (Shannon) Kelly, Colleen McDonald, Patrick Kelly, Terry (Anne) Kelly, and Ellen Giacomini; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of John Patrick "Pat" Kelly and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Pat Kelly as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
