SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Brent Rayburn Reddrick Hamlet, who
4passed away on September 24, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Brent Hamlet was born to Debra and Kenneth Hamlet
6on October 17, 1987; he received his Bachelor of Arts in
7History from Alcorn State University and was completing a
8Master of Arts in School Counseling from Chicago State
9University; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Brent Hamlet worked at Horizons for Youth in
11Chicago, where he managed and advocated for middle school-aged
12students and their families in the Explore group, through
13which he began pursuing a personal mission of positively
14impacting youth and families; he was an educator, community
15organizer, and life coach with more than 10 years of
16experience, and he was fully committed to an abolitionist
17pedagogy; he worked side-by-side with underserved families in
18a variety of settings; most recently, he directed and designed
19after-school enrichment programs on the South Side; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Brent Hamlet was a Fellow with Chicago United For
21Equity and was recently elected vice chairman of the Policy
22Steering Committee with the Workers Center for Racial Justice;

2    WHEREAS, Brent Hamlet was a devoted member of Trinity
3United Church of Christ, where he served on both the Social
4Justice Ministry and the 20 Something Ministry; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Brent Hamlet exhibited an early thirst for
6knowledge about the African continent and African-descended
7peoples of the Diaspora; his mother infused a love of reading
8books and skills in seeking knowledge, oratory/public
9speaking, and speech writing, which served him well as an
10adult; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Brent Hamlet was determined to always do things
12his way; he never met a stranger and was able to build rapport
13with those he encountered; he was a caring and thoughtful son,
14grandson, sibling, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Brent Hamlet was preceded in death by his mother,
16Debra Lynn Reddrick Hamlet; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Brent Hamlet is survived by his father, Ken
18Hamlet; his siblings, Babatunde, Brielle, and Daren; his
19nieces and nephews, A'mia Imani Beeks, Joven Hamlet, Kaysen
20"Sunni" Hamlet, and Salem Kathlynn Hamlet; his uncles, Charles
21Rayburn and Mark Reddrick; his aunts, Earline Mayo, Cynthia

1Reddrick, and Marlo Reddrick Hyde; his cousins, Mark Andrew
2(Sally) Battin Reddrick and Jared Reddrick; and numerous other
3first, second, and third cousins and close relatives from
4across the country; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
7Brent Rayburn Reddrick Hamlet and extend our sincere
8condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
9him; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Brent Hamlet as an expression of our
12deepest sympathy.
