HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Someone develops Alzheimer's disease every 68
3seconds; that number will increase to every 33 seconds by 2050;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is on the rise, with more than
65.2 million Americans of all ages currently living with the
7disease; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Over $140 billion is spent on Alzheimer's disease
9every year through Medicare and Medicaid; that number will rise
10to $1.2 trillion in 2050; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Currently, over 210,000 people in Illinois live
12with the disease; there will be an estimated 14% increase in
13the next 11 years; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The Alzheimer's Association and the Centers for
15Disease Prevention's Healthy Aging Program have developed a
16Road Map to advance cognitive health as a vital, integral
17component of public health; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Illinois Public Health Association and the
19Alzheimer's Association issue a call to action for an effective
20coordinated approach to moving cognitive health into public

1health practice and developing partnerships and assuring a
2competent workforce; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The impact of Alzheimer's and other dementia on
4Illinois families, the health care system, and society as a
5whole is of great importance; the need for home and
6community-based services for those with Alzheimer's is on the
7rise and caregiver stress is at an all-time high; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a looming public health
9crisis and the need to address cognitive health and to meet the
10needs of caregivers is growing daily; we call upon policymakers
11to join in the efforts to raise awareness, promote cognitive
12functioning and help meet the needs of caregivers and to
13acknowledge the hundreds of thousands of persons with
14Alzheimer's and other dementia in Illinois, their families, and
15caregivers; and
 
16    WHEREAS, On April 2, 2014, Alzheimer's and public health
17advocates will speak up for the needs and rights of persons
18with cognitive impairment; these advocates ask the Illinois
19General Assembly to make Alzheimer's disease a priority public
20health issue in the State; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

1we designate the date of April 2, 2014 as Annual Alzheimer's
2Association and Illinois Public Health Association Advocacy
3Day in the State of Illinois.
