SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Herbert R. "Kip" Pohl, Jr., formerly of La Grange Park, who passed away on March 30, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Herbert Pohl, Jr. was born in 1942 and raised in La Grange Park; he graduated from Lyons Township High School in 1960 and studied journalism at Southern Illinois University before returning to La Grange Park to take over the family-owned news publication; and

WHEREAS, Herbert Pohl, Jr. founded and published The La Grange Sun Newspapers, which served the western suburbs; after selling the newspapers, he became head of acquisitions with Copley Newspapers; later he was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Homes International magazine; in retirement he started Iowa City Entertainment, Inc., a multi-business hospitality company; he was also an owner of Pancheros Mexican Grill, a chain of more than 65 restaurants; and

WHEREAS, Herbert Pohl, Jr. served his community in numerous ways; he was Chairman of the Board for the YMCA and raised over $7,000,000 for the organization's La Grange Park chapter; he was an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in La Grange Park, and then Grace Episcopal Church in Hinsdale; he was a member of the Kiwanis and headed a division of the La Grange Park Pet Parade and maintained a spotless record of perfect attendance at all of his children and grandchildren's sports and extracurricular events; he was voted "Man of the Year" by the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce in 1982; and

WHEREAS, Herbert Pohl, Jr. was a tremendous cook, an avid gardner, and a collector of fine arts; and

WHEREAS, Herbert Pohl, Jr. is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Cheryl; his sons, Jeffrey (Kelly) and James (Anna); his daughter, Jennifer; his grandchildren, Griffin, Reagan, Garrett, and Alexandra; and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Herbert R. "Kip" Pohl, Jr., and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Herbert Pohl, Jr. as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
