HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to honor our colleague, State
4Representative Frances Ann Hurley, on her 10 years of esteemed
5service as a member of the Illinois General Assembly and thank
6her for her dedication to the State and her community; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Through her work as a legislator, a volunteer,
8and a community member, Rep. Hurley has shown her abiding
9commitment to the Southwest Side, which she has called home
10her entire life; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Prior to serving in the General Assembly, Rep.
12Hurley attended St. Barnabas Elementary School, Mother McAuley
13High School, and Saint Xavier University; she then worked on
14behalf of Southwest Side families in the offices of Alderwoman
15Ginger Rugai and Alderman Matthew O'Shea; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Rep. Hurley has served on a number of local
17boards, working to support the achievements of special-needs
18athletes on Special Olympics, to ensure access to substance
19abuse and mental health treatment with Guildhaus, to prevent
20domestic violence and to advocate for survivors with A New
21Direction-WINGS, and to support the families of fallen first
22responders with The 100 Club; and

1    WHEREAS, As a legislator, Rep. Hurley has championed many
2of the same issues that motivated her as a volunteer and
3community member; she spearheaded the effort to create a
4Special Olympics lottery ticket in 2014, which continues to
5raise millions of dollars to serve more than 40,000 Special
6Olympics athletes; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Rep. Hurley has worked to extend care for young
8adults with special needs up to the age of 22, and she has
9worked to secure additional funding for Special Olympics
10Chicago/Special Children's Charities; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Rep. Hurley has worked to prevent domestic
12violence and the exploitation of children by passing
13innovative measures to help hair stylists recognize the signs
14of abuse and closing a loophole to keep predators out of
15restaurant playgrounds; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Rep. Hurley has been a strong supporter of police
17officers and fire fighters, which she has shown through
18chairing the House Police & Fire Committee, passing
19legislation securing funding for officer mental health
20resources and for the families of fallen first responders,
21assembling a task force to address officer suicide, and
22enacting Scott's Law to keep officers safe during highway

1traffic stops; and
 
2    WHEREAS, As a founding member of the Mod Caucus, Rep.
3Hurley has been dedicated to compromise and cooperation; she
4and her fellow moderate lawmakers have worked with colleagues
5across the political spectrum to find common ground and
6improve policy by ensuring independent and centrist voices
7were heard; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Rep. Hurley has celebrated her Irish heritage as
9a member of the Illinois Irish Caucus, as co-chair of the
10National Irish Caucus, and as a board member of the Irish
11Fellowship Club of Chicago; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Rep. Hurley has generously shared her time and
13talents with her community as a girls' softball and volleyball
14coach and as a volunteer for several organizations, including
15the Y-Me Breast Cancer organization, Misericordia, the Chicago
16Police Memorial Run to Remember, Kiwanis, and her parish of
17St. Christina; and
 
18    WHEREAS, All who have had the opportunity to serve
19alongside Rep. Hurley have appreciated her sense of humor, her
20warm friendship, and her commitment to bringing people
21together for the betterment of our State; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we honor and thank State Representative Frances Ann Hurley for
4her years of dedicated service, and we wish her the best on her
5future success; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to Rep. Hurley as an expression of our esteem and
8respect.
