2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to commend Alderperson Sophia King on her
4service to the 4th Ward as a member of the Chicago City
5Council; and
6    WHEREAS, Ald. King grew up in Evanston, with her family
7hailing from the Mississippi Delta; she attended schools in
8Evanston and in Jackson, Mississippi; she earned her
9bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Illinois
10and her master's degree in Education and Social Policy from
11Northwestern University; she has been a resident of the 4th
12Ward for over 35 years; and
13    WHEREAS, Professionally, Ald. King has been instrumental
14in opening doors of educational opportunity within her
15immediate and the greater Chicago community; she worked as an
16educator and administrator at the Latin School of Chicago,
17where she diversified classes; she helped found the Ariel
18Community Academy, a public school established to provide
19North Kenwood-Oakland residents with a high quality education;
20she served as deputy director of Sports Administration and
21Facilities Management at Chicago Public Schools from 2001 to
222003, during which she managed a staff of 30 and a budget of
23$12 million; and

1    WHEREAS, Ald. King has served the 4th Ward on the Chicago
2City Council since 2016, representing parts of Downtown, the
3South Loop, Bronzeville, Kenwood, and Hyde Park, and was
4reelected in 2019; during her tenure, she has led the 4th Ward
5with transparency and a focus on service, serving as a voice
6for those who have historically lacked a champion in City Hall
7and as an advocate for parity; and
8    WHEREAS, Ald. King has successfully implemented a number
9of positive changes in the 4th Ward and the City of Chicago,
10such as leading the fight for a $15 minimum wage in Chicago
11through her Raise Chicago Ordinance, the passage of which gave
12400,000 Chicagoans a raise and lifted 100,000 Chicagoans out
13of poverty; she has worked on the front lines on crime and
14public safety issues, fighting to reform the Chicago Police
15Department (CPD) through the creation of the Civilian Office
16of Police Accountability and ensuring the CPD has the
17resources and personnel to better stop the violence; she has
18encouraged firms that do business in her ward to go above and
19beyond the city's goals on minority hiring, with minority
20participation often exceeding 40%; she has also successfully
21secured millions in funding for education and infrastructure
22projects; and
23    WHEREAS, Ald. King has offered a number of constituent

1services to 4th Ward residents, including listening and
2responding to community needs, improving efficiency in
3communication and access, sponsoring quarterly senior socials
4and an annual senior ball, and hosting Alderman On the Block
5events across the ward; and
6    WHEREAS, Ald. King has served as chair of the Chicago City
7Council's Progressive Reform Caucus and as vice chair of the
8Committee on Education and Child Development and several joint
9committees; she has also served as a member of the Committee on
10Budget and Government Operations, the Committee on Committees
11and Rules, the Committee on Contracting Oversight and Equity,
12the Committee on Finance, the Committee on Housing and Real
13Estate, the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety, the
14Committee on Special Events, Cultural Affairs and Recreation,
15the Committee on Transportation and Public Way, and several
16joint committees; and
17    WHEREAS, Ald. King has further assisted her community
18through involvement in several organizations, including
19serving as president of the Kenwood Park Advisory Council,
20serving as vice president of Planned Parenthood Chicago,
21creating a community response to gun violence with The It's
22Time Organization (TITO), and founding the not-for-profit
23Harriet's Daughters, which operates to educate and empower
24African American women and businesses while working with

1elected officials and individuals in leadership positions to
2spotlight hiring disparities and to enable better access to
3jobs and procurement opportunities; and
4    WHEREAS, Ald. King and her husband, Alan King, are the
5parents of two adult daughters; therefore, be it
8we commend Alderperson Sophia King for her work on the Chicago
9City Council, and we thank her for her years of dedicated
10service to the people of the 4th Ward and the City of Chicago;
11and be it further
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to Ald. King as an expression of our esteem and
