HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Turner Syndrome is a rare and non-inheritable chromosomal condition that occurs when the secondary X chromosome is partially or completely missing for those born female; and

WHEREAS, More than 98% of fetuses with Turner Syndrome will die before birth, resulting in about 10% percent of all first trimester miscarriages; and

WHEREAS, Turner Syndrome affects approximately one in 2,000 female live births worldwide; and

WHEREAS, Three in 10 individuals diagnosed with Turner Syndrome have Mosaic Turner Syndrome, for which the number of X chromosomes can vary; and

WHEREAS, There are over 85,000 people living with Turner Syndrome in the United States, and more than 30% of individuals born with Turner Syndrome are not diagnosed until they are 15 years old, with only 3.5% receiving adequate care; and

WHEREAS, Those living with Turner Syndrome often face lifelong cognitive, emotional, physical, and psychological challenges that can be better mitigated with early diagnosis and treatment; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare February of 2024 as Turner Syndrome Awareness Month in the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge increased funding for Turner Syndrome research and support; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge health care professionals, public schools, educators, and the public to become more familiar with Turner Syndrome in order to promote early diagnosis, support those living with Turner Syndrome, and raise support for organizations dedicated to improving the lives of people with Turner Syndrome.
