| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION | 2 | | WHEREAS, Buddy Guy was born to a sharecropper's family | 3 | | near the town of Lettsworth, Louisiana in 1936 and began | 4 | | playing guitar at the age of seven after building his own | 5 | | guitar; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Buddy Guy moved to Chicago in 1957, gaining | 7 | | recognition for a fiery and flashy guitar playing style that | 8 | | drew the attention of other blues players and songwriters, | 9 | | including Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon; and | 10 | | WHEREAS, Buddy Guy began working as a guitarist for | 11 | | Chicago's Chess Records in 1960, playing a pivotal role on | 12 | | albums for other artists, including Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, | 13 | | Howlin' Wolf, and Little Walter, among others, while also | 14 | | launching his own career as a solo artist, which developed | 15 | | into extensive tours around the world; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, Buddy Guy opened his own nightclub, Buddy Guy's | 17 | | Legends, in Chicago in 1989, where he has played annual | 18 | | residencies and acted as a host for other blues musicians; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, Buddy Guy was inducted into the Blues Hall of | 20 | | Fame in 1985 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005; he was | 21 | | awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2003 and was a Kennedy |

| 1 | | Center honoree in 2012; that same year, he performed the song | 2 | | Sweet Home Chicago at the White House, where he was joined by | 3 | | President Obama for the chorus; he won the Grammy Award for | 4 | | lifetime achievement in 2015; therefore, be it | 5 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 6 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 7 | | we declare November 24, 2023 as Buddy Guy Day in the State of | 8 | | Illinois; and be it further | 9 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 10 | | presented to Buddy Guy as an expression of our esteem and | 11 | | respect. |
