HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Rockford Police Department K9 Officer Nyx, who was killed in the line of duty on January 28, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Nyx was a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois from Belarus who completed her training in 2018 before joining the department on October 1st of that same year; she was trained in narcotics detection, evidence recovery, human tracking, and apprehension; and

WHEREAS, Nyx was a trailblazer in the Rockford Police Department; she was the first female dog that provided these services in the Rockford community; and

WHEREAS, Nyx and her partner, Officer Vargas, were dedicated to protecting and serving their community and apprehending violent offenders; Officer Vargas is left with the responsibility of carrying out their duties in her honor; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Nyx and extend our sincere condolences to Officer Vargas, the Rockford Police Department, and all those who loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to the Rockford Police Department and Officer Vargas as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
