HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of President James Earl "Jimmy" Carter Jr., 39th President of the United States, who passed away on December 29, 2024; and

WHEREAS, President Carter was born on October 1, 1924, and he dedicated his life to peace, democracy, and humanitarian efforts, leaving an indelible mark on the world through his leadership and service; and

WHEREAS, President Carter's early political career included service in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967 and as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to the citizens of his state; and

WHEREAS, President Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, during which time he established the United States Department of Energy and the Department of Education, and he created a national energy policy focused on conservation and innovation; and

WHEREAS, After leaving office in 1981, President Carter established The Carter Center in 1982 to advance human rights, promote democracy, and combat global health challenges, efforts that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the years, President Carter undertook peace negotiations, election monitoring, and initiatives to eradicate infectious diseases, profoundly impacting the lives of millions worldwide; and

WHEREAS, President Carter's dedication to service extended to the non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity, where he played a key role in building homes and improving living conditions for over 59 million people globally, embodying compassion and humility; and

WHEREAS, President Carter's legacy as a statesman, humanitarian, and advocate for social justice will inspire generations to strive for a more equitable and peaceful world; and

WHEREAS, President Carter passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29, 2024 at the age of 100, following a life devoted to public service and global betterment; and

WHEREAS, President Carter's passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter in American and global history, and his contributions will continue to shape lives and communities for years to come; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of President James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, 39th President of the United States, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we honor the life and legacy of President Carter, and we express our profound gratitude for his lifelong service to humanity; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Carter family as a token of our respect and recognition of President Carter's extraordinary life and enduring contributions to the world.
