SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Laton Ernest "Ernie" Mahan of Dunlap, who passed away on September 25, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Ernie Mahan was born to Sylvester and June (Ford) Mahan in Peoria on January 25, 1947; he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968; he married Mary Ellen Kerker in Peoria on February 15, 1969; and

WHEREAS, Ernie Mahan worked at Caterpillar, Inc. for over 30 years, retiring as a line foreman in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Ernie Mahan's passion for helping others led him to serve in a number of positions revolving around human services, including as an EMT, a volunteer firefighter for the Northern Tazewell Fire Department, and a court-appointed children's advocate through Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA); he also volunteered at different organizations, including the Friendship House, Meals on Wheels, and the Special Education Association of Peoria County (SEAPCO); and

WHEREAS, Ernie Mahan was preceded in death by his parents; and

WHEREAS, Ernie Mahan is survived by his wife; his sons, Dennis (Gretchen) Mahan and Chris Mahan; his daughter, Jill (Chuck) Mathes; his grandchildren, Gabriel, Helena, Haydn, Faith, and Brody; his brother, Ken Mahan; his sisters, Sue (Scott) Bitcon and Carol Young; and several nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Laton Ernest "Ernie" Mahan and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Ernie Mahan as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
