SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Jesse Lee Fleming of Chicago, who
4passed away on August 27, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming was born to W.T. and Beatrice
6Fleming in Chicago on March 11, 1947; he committed to his faith
7as a young adult and was baptized at St. Matthew Missionary
8Baptist Church; he graduated from Zenos Colman Elementary
9School in 1963 and Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable High School in
101967, where he played trumpet, piano, and guitar, performed in
11the orchestra and booster band, and participated in the
12Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and the Senior Club;
13he attended Wilson Junior College, known today as Kennedy-King
14Community College; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming was an accomplished musician;
16he played for the Midwest Philharmonic Orchestra for several
17years and for numerous bands, leading him to travel across the
18Midwest and the South; he toured with the Grand Express Band
19and traveled the entire country; he was a resident musician in
20Las Vegas for many years, and he also worked as a movie extra
21in Hollywood, California; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming returned to Chicago after

1touring in 1982; he gave private music lessons on the guitar
2and trumpet for a while, which he ended due to his students'
3lack of seriousness; he worked for the U.S. Postal Service
4from 1991 until his retirement in 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming preferred staying home and
6living a quiet life in retirement; he enjoyed watching Chicago
7Cubs games and old western television shows, including
8Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and Have Gun - Will Travel; he especially
9enjoyed the western movies The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
10and Winchester '73; he loved being on social media and posting
11on Facebook; he also loved listening to music of all genres,
12including rhythm & blues, gospel, soul, pop, jazz, and
13classical; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming was a skilled chess player, a
15devoted Chicago Cubs fan, and an avid reader; he will be
16remembered for being an intelligent and outgoing person; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming was preceded in death by his
18parents and his sister, Cansady Fleming; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Jesse Lee Fleming is survived by his sisters,
20Beatrice A. Haney, Mary L. Fleming, and Amy L. Fleming; his
21brother, Terry L. Fleming; his aunt, Mattie Allen; his niece,
22Mia K. Fleming; his nephews, Derrick K. Fleming Sr., TiJuan L.

1Fleming, Brian K. Fleming Sr., and Maurice L. (Michaela)
2Fleming; his great-nephews, Derrick K. Fleming Jr., Brian
3Fleming Jr., and Cameron Fleming; his great-grandnephews,
4Kah'Rion and Derrick III; his lifelong friends, Harold Warner
5and James Rankins; and a host of cousins and friends;
6therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Jesse Lee Fleming and extend our sincere condolences to his
10family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
11further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Jesse Lee Fleming as an expression
14of our deepest sympathy.
