 1        AN ACT in relation to vehicles.

 2        Be it enacted by the People of  the  State  of  Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:

 4        Section  5.  The  Illinois  Vehicle  Code  is  amended by
 5    adding Section 12-807.3 as follows:

 6        (625 ILCS 5/12-807.3 new)
 7        Sec. 12-807.3.  Bus seat  safety  belts;  rooftop  safety
 8    hatch.
 9        (a) No  person shall operate any Type I or Type II school
10    bus manufactured after the effective date of this  amendatory
11    Act  of the 93rd General Assembly unless a set of seat safety
12    belts in  good  operating  condition  is  available  to  each
13    passenger  and  the  school  bus  is  equipped with a rooftop
14    safety hatch.  The belts and belt anchorages shall conform to
15    the equipment requirements of this Article VIII.
16        (b)  This Section does not apply to a school bus  legally
17    registered in another state and displaying valid registration
18    plates  of  that state if the bus is not operated in Illinois
19    on a regular basis and  if  the  bus  is  being  operated  in
20    Illinois  in connection with the cultural, tourist, athletic,
21    or similar activities of persons enrolled as  students  in  a
22    school or schools located outside of Illinois.

23        Section  99.  Effective date.  This Act takes effect upon
24    becoming law.
