HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate Susan Cisna of Mattoon on being named the 2004 Illinois Reading Educator of the Year for grades 6 through 12; and

WHEREAS, The award is given by the Illinois Reading Council (IRC); the committee awarded Mrs. Cisna the honor based on her philosophy of education and outstanding commitment to students, parents, and community at East Prairie School in Tuscola; recommendations from her colleagues and administrator affirmed Mrs. Cisna's dedication to teaching reading; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Cisna has been teaching for 30 years; among the many programs she has developed is the "Voice From the Prairie" reading project, which partners students and their parents with help from local community groups; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Cisna has presented at many education workshops, is a member of the Illinois Reading Council, the International Reading Association, and the National Council of Teachers of English; she is currently co-president of the East Central Illinois EIU Reading Council; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Cisna has made a practice of involving herself in the full spectrum of education; she continually incorporates new ideas into lesson plans, offers students help outside of the classroom, mentors new teachers, stays current on teaching strategies, and serves as a leader in her field; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Cisna and her husband, Dennis, have 2 children, Douglas Cisna and Michele Wicklander, and 2 grandchildren; she is the daughter of William and Wanda Grimes of Mattoon; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Cisna was publicly lauded for her accomplishments in and out of the classroom at the annual IRC conference in Springfield on March 19, 2004; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Susan Cisna on being named the 2004 Illinois Reading Educator of the Year for grades 6 through 12; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Susan Cisna as an expression of our profound respect and esteem for her and our many thanks for her devotion to educating the students of Illinois.
