HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate Ray Sibille on
4 the occasion of his retirement as a jockey after an illustrious
5 career spanning 3 and a half decades; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Mr. Sibille was born in Sunset, Louisiana; he grew
7 up around horses and rode in match races as a youngster; he
8 took out his jockey's license at the age of 16 and scored the
9 first win of his career with Joe Sada at Evangeline Downs; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Mr. Sibille began riding in Chicago in 1973,
11 winning titles at Arlington, Hawthorne, and Sportsman's Park;
12 he collected six wins on a program at Arlington on June 23,
13 1980; his 105 wins at Sportsman's Park in 1981 stood as a
14 record until 1992; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Mr. Sibille moved his tack to California in 1981
16 and returned to the Chicago scene in 1993; his greatest racing
17 thrill occurred in 1988, when he won the $2 million Breeders'
18 Cup Turf with 12-1 long shot Great Communicator at Churchill
19 Downs; he also won the San Juan Capistrano and Hollywood Derby
20 with the same horse; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Mr. Sibille earned career win number 4,000 at
22 Sportsman's Park on April 18, 2000 aboard Beware The Ides; his
23 career totals from Equibase Company list him with 4,264 wins
24 from 36,858 mounts as of Wednesday, July 21, 2004; and
 
25     WHEREAS, Mr. Sibille had his final mount on Wednesday, July
26 21, 2004 at Arlington Park, where going into the race he was
27 the fourth leading jockey in Park history with 981 wins;
28 therefore, be it

1 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
2 congratulate Ray Sibille on the occasion of his retirement
3 after a distinguished career spanning over 3 and a half
4 decades; and be it further
 
5     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6 presented to Ray Sibille as an expression of our respect and
7 esteem.
