HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, St. Bernard Hospital in Chicago is celebrating a
3 century of continuous service to the Englewood community; and
 
4     WHEREAS, St. Bernard Hotel Dieu Hospital was founded in
5 1903 by seven sisters from the Religious Hospitallers of St.
6 Joseph, a French Canadian order; the hospital treated its first
7 patient in December of 1905 and has operated from the same
8 building on West 64th Street ever since; the hospital's name
9 was changed in 1962 to St. Bernard Hospital; and
 
10     WHEREAS, St. Bernard's emergency care facility, which
11 opened in 1983, treats approximately 33,000 patients annually;
12 and
 
13     WHEREAS, In 2003, the hospital introduced a pediatric
14 mobile health unit to give inoculations and medical services to
15 schoolchildren throughout the community; and
 
16     WHEREAS, After one year in operation, the pediatric mobile
17 health unit is providing necessary services to approximately
18 400 children per month; and
 
19     WHEREAS, St. Bernard has 700 staff members and treats over
20 50,000 patients annually, providing more than $5 million in
21 free care to those unable to afford needed services; and
 
22     WHEREAS, The Englewood community, which is a
23 federally-designated health professional shortage area, is
24 reviving, thanks to the leadership of institutions like St.
25 Bernard; and
 
26     WHEREAS, In 1999, St. Bernard formed a housing development
27 corporation and reclaimed seven abandoned acres across from the
28 hospital as Bernard Place, Englewood's first housing

1 development in over three decades; Phase I has been completed
2 with 63 fully-occupied new homes; work on Phase II will begin
3 in 2005; Bernard Place has received the Richard H. Driehaus
4 Foundation Award for Outstanding Non-Profit Neighborhood Real
5 Estate Project; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8 congratulate St. Bernard Hospital as it celebrates its 100th
9 anniversary and we convey our appreciation for its
10 extraordinary service to the community; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to St. Bernard Hospital with our best wishes.
