 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  wish to recognize Clifton Herford of Chicago
 4    who will be celebrating his 104th birthday on  May  1,  2003;
 5    and

 6        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Herford  was  born  in 1899 in Huntsville,
 7    Alabama; and

 8        WHEREAS, Mr. Herford moved from Alabama to Chicago  as  a
 9    young  man and was employed by Benefield Glass Company, where
10    he worked for over 30 years;  he  was  married  to  the  late
11    Eleanor for over 40 years and they have 3 children, Ada Ford,
12    James Benson, and Leonard Newman; he has one sister, Bernice;
13    and

14        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Herford  has  witnessed amazing changes in
15    technology throughout his life; most  of  all,  he  remembers
16    being  a  young  boy  and "walking down the road often, there
17    were no lights and  the  only  way  to  see  was  light  from
18    lightening bugs."; and

19        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Herford  is  an  active member of the Park
20    Manor Neighbors Community Organization and a member  of  Park
21    Manor  Christian  Church;  he retired as the church custodian
22    when he was 97 years of age; also, he is a former  member  of
23    the African American League of Alabama; therefore, be it

24        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
25    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
26    we  recognize  Clifton  Herford  on the occasion of his 104th
27    birthday and wish him good health and happiness in all of his
28    future endeavors; and be it further

29        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
30    presented to Clifton Herford.
