 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the House of  Representatives  of
 3    the  State  of  Illinois  wish  to  congratulate  Dr. John A.
 4    Metzger  on  the  occasion   of   his   retirement   as   the
 5    Superintendent  of  Johnston City Schools after beginning his
 6    work in education 35 years ago; and

 7        WHEREAS,   Dr.   Metzger   attended   Southern   Illinois
 8    University, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1968  and  his
 9    master's degree was in 1971, both in history, and earning his
10    Ph.D.  in Educational Leadership in 1982; he valiantly served
11    his country from 1968 until 1970 in the U.S. Army in Vietnam;
12    and

13        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Metzger  began  his  teaching  career   at
14    Farmington  Junior  High  School  in  1968;  he  worked  as a
15    teaching assistant at Southern Illinois  University  and  did
16    research  for the Illinois Historic Site Survey; he served as
17    Superintendent and Principal  of  Logan  Grade  School,  Akin
18    Grade School, and Thompsonville Grade and High Schools; and

19        WHEREAS,  As  Superintendent  of Johnston City Schools, a
20    unit district with 1,350 students, Dr. Metzger has supervised
21    a staff of over 125; under his leadership, the  district  has
22    completed a building project, a maintenance program, a policy
23    re-write, and many union negotiations; and

24        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Metzger  has been the recipient of several
25    honors including the Norman Caldwell History Prize, the  NDEA
26    Fellowship,   the  SIU  Running  Club  Scholarship,  and  the
27    Franklin County Conservation Principal of the Year  in  1985;
28    he     has    served    as    coordinator    of    a    local
29    Superintendent/Principal network, as associate member of  the
30    Illinois  Administrator  Academy in 1990, and as president of
31    the Shawnee Division  of  I.A.S.A.  from  1996  to  1997;  he
32    received  the  Distinguished  Educator Award in 1997 from Phi

 1    Delta Kappa; and

 2        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Metzger  has  written  several   published
 3    articles  on  local  history  topics;  he  has  served as the
 4    director and a volunteer with the Rend Lake Festival 5K  Road
 5    Race;  he is a member of Benton American Legion, W. Frankfort
 6    Moose Lodge, and Veterans of Foreign Wars; he has  served  as
 7    Commander  of  the  Benton  V.F.W.  Post  since  1995 and was
 8    coordinator of the Thompsonville Akin Little League from 1980
 9    until 1984; he received the RRCA National Volunteer Award  in
10    1992; he is a past editor of the Running Reporter which won a
11    national  RRCA  Award  in 1995; he also served as chairman of
12    Benton V.F.W. Post and District  15's  "Voice  of  Democracy"
13    Programs; and

14        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Metzger is married to Paula Pyszka Metzger
15    and is the father  of  Karl  and  Kurt;  he  enjoys  running,
16    tennis, sailing, and biking; therefore, be it

17        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
18    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
19    we  congratulate  Dr.  John A. Metzger on the occasion of his
20    retirement as Superintendent of Johnston City Schools, and we
21    thank him for his  dedication  to  many,  many  students  and
22    teachers throughout the years; and be it further

23        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
24    presented to Dr. John A. Metzger  as  an  expression  of  our
25    respect and esteem.
