 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  are pleased to congratulate Carl R. Woese of
 4    Champaign  on  being  presented   the   Crafoord   Prize   in
 5    Biosciences  from  the  Royal  Swedish Academy of Sciences in
 6    Sweden; and

 7        WHEREAS,  This  annual  prize  marks  accomplishments  in
 8    scientific fields not covered by the Nobel Prizes in science,
 9    which  the  academy  also  selects;  he  is  the  Stanley  O.
10    Ikenberry Endowed Chair at  the  University  of  Illinois  at
11    Urbana-Champaign  and  honored  for "his discovery of a third
12    domain of life" according to the academy; and

13        WHEREAS, The king of Sweden presented the  prize  to  Mr.
14    Woese  on  September  24,  2003  at  the  end  of a three-day
15    symposium  devoted  to  the  "Phylogeny  and   Evolution   of
16    Microorganisms;  he  concluded  the  symposium with a keynote
17    address on "The Archaea and What They Represent";  therefore,
18    be it

19        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
20    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
21    we   congratulate  Carl  R.  Woese  on  being  presented  the
22    prestigious Crafoord Prize  in  Biosciences  from  the  Royal
23    Swedish  Academy  of  Sciences  and  wish him well in all his
24    future endeavors; and be it further

25        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
26    presented  to  Carl  R. Woese as an expression of our respect
27    and esteem.
