HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his life, he worked to ensure that all people were given the opportunity to follow their dreams, regardless of their race or station in life; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10, 1964, in response to his diligent efforts to racially integrate the nation through peaceful means; and

WHEREAS, School children continue to learn from Dr. King as they read and study his "I Have A Dream" speech that was given during the March on Washington on August 28, 1963; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King's aspirations for a color blind society detailed in that speech inspire all citizens to live together with mutual respect and understanding; and

WHEREAS, Leaders look to the example that Dr. King established when evaluating what can be done to improve human rights here and abroad; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commemorate the 75th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 15, 2004, in the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the State of Illinois joins the nation in celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 19, 2004.
