SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The General Assembly takes pride in recognizing
3 the accomplishments and contributions of Illinois officials
4 and citizens; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The General Assembly, as an august body, exercises
6 discerning judgment in resolutions to cite the noted
7 achievements of a select few individuals, especially when
8 bestowing one of the highest methods of recognition by the
9 State; and
 
10     WHEREAS, In recognition of the lasting contributions that
11 Patricia Thompson Madden made on the issue of mental health at
12 the John J. Madden Mental Health Center at Chicago, and across
13 the State of Illinois, the General Assembly would like to
14 recognize Ms. Madden, who served as the Center's Administrator
15 for ten years, by naming the Center's Administrative Pavilion
16 after her; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden was a woman who dedicated
18 her life to persons with mental illness; she died on August 31,
19 2003; she is survived by her son, Robert Baren, and
20 daughter-in-law Alice; her father, Robert Thompson; her
21 sister, Elizabeth, and brother-in-law Stanley Hewins; her
22 brother, Lawrence Robert Thompson, and sister-in-law Rhonda;
23 her aunt, Nancy Tobara; her nephews, Jason and his wife Olivia
24 Herrick, Christopher, Shawn and his wife Daniele, Eric, and
25 Shaden Thompson; and her nieces Carrie and Shaelynn Thompson;
26 and
 
27     WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden was born in Peoria and
28 moved frequently as a child, living in Chicago; Muncie,
29 Indiana; Kansas City, Missouri; and Villa Park; she was a
30 member of the first graduating class of Willowbrook High School
31 in Villa Park; after graduating from the University of Illinois

1 with a bachelor's degree in nursing, she received her master's
2 degree in community mental health nursing from Arizona State
3 University; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden went to work after
5 college at the U.S. Army Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama, where
6 as a firsthand witness of the civil rights movement, she became
7 an advocate of equal rights for all; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden went on to work with
9 psychiatric patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital
10 in Waco, Texas, where she witnessed the toll the Vietnam War
11 took on returning veterans, and in the late 1960s, she served
12 as a psychiatric nurse at Denver General Hospital; she also
13 spent several years teaching at California State University in
14 Sacramento; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden returned to the Chicago
16 area in 1986 and began working for the State of Illinois, first
17 as the Associate Director for Administration of the Illinois
18 State Psychiatric Institute and then as the Hospital
19 Administrator of the John J. Madden Mental Health Center for
20 ten years; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden was very involved in the
22 Oak Park community, where she was a sixteen year resident,
23 serving as chairperson of the Barrie Park Citizens Advisory
24 Committee from its inception in 1999 and as a member of the
25 First United Church of Oak Park, where she served as
26 chairperson of the Christian Education Committee, as a member
27 of the Church Council, and as an ordained Elder in the
28 Presbyterian Church; therefore be it
 
29     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
30 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
31 CONCURRING HEREIN, that the Administrative Pavilion at the John

1 J. Madden Mental Health Center at Chicago is named the Patricia
2 Thompson Madden Administrative Pavilion in honor of Patricia
3 Thompson Madden; and be it further
 
4     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of resolution be presented
5 to the family of Patricia Thompson Madden; and be it further
 
6     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to
7 the Director of Central Management Services, the Secretary of
8 Human Services, and other operating authorities for the cited
9 building.
