SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, During the month of May 2004, Temple Judea Mizpah
3 Skokie's original Reform Jewish Congregation will celebrate 50
4 years of worship, providing a faith community, life-long
5 education, social justice, and commitment to the neighborhoods
6 and communities of its members, the State of Illinois, and the
7 Federal Government; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Temple Judea Mizpah has served Skokie since the
9 first service on March 4, 1954, and adopted the name Temple
10 Judea in May of 1954; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Temple Judea Mizpah's original Rabbi, Karl
12 Weiner, provided inspiration, leadership, education, a strong
13 sense of social justice, and compassion that radiated
14 throughout the congregation, the community, and Illinois; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Temple Judea Mizpah received the land it currently
16 occupies at Conrad and Niles Center Road as a gift from
17 congregants on July 23, 1954; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Temple Judea Mizpah initiated the first religious
19 school classes in September, 1954; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Temple Judea Mizpah conducted the first Reform
21 Jewish High Holy Day Services in Niles Township on September 27
22 and 28, 1954; and
 
23     WHEREAS, On October 17, 1954, Temple Judea Mizpah broke
24 ground for the construction of the temple building at 8610
25 Niles Center Road; and
 
26     WHEREAS, Temple Judea Mizpah congregants marched in Selma,
27 Alabama, protested the Democratic National Convention during
28 the Vietnam War, stood up to the Neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan in

1 Skokie, provided settlement services to new Russian
2 immigrants, adopted Vietnamese Boat families, fed the poor and
3 hungry at the Good News Soup Kitchen, planted trees in Israel,
4 and presented challenging adult and youth education through
5 such venues as the religious school and the Karl Weiner
6 Memorial Scholar in Residence program; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Temple Judea merged with Temple Mizpah, the
8 original Reform Jewish Congregation in the Rogers Park area of
9 Chicago in the summer of 1977 to become one of the most
10 significant North Shore congregations in the metropolitan
11 Chicago area; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Temple Judea Mizpah provides educational
13 programs, community leadership, a strong faith community, a
14 commitment to social justice, leadership in bringing the
15 diverse citizens of Skokie and the North Shore together, and
16 dedicated service to its congregants via Rabbi Audrey Korotkin;
17 therefore, be it
 
18     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
19 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the week
20 of May 1, 2004, through May 8, 2004, as Celebration of Temple
21 Judea Mizpah's Golden Jubilee 50th Anniversary Week in the
22 State of Illinois; and be it further
 
23     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
24 presented to Temple Judea Mizpah as an expression of our
25 congratulations on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee 50th
26 Anniversary.
