SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of Lillie Maud Mason of East St. Louis on Wednesday, February 18, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Lillie Maud Mason was born on December 20, 1902, in Shuqualak, Mississippi; she attended Shuqualak public schools and Mary Holmes Institute, and she was a former teacher in the Shuqualak, Mississippi public schools; and

WHEREAS, In 1941, in order to insure that her children would have a better opportunity to receive a good education, the family moved to East St. Louis, where she made many friends; she joined the Friendship Baptist Church, where she sang in the Gospel Chorus and served as secretary of the Missionary Society; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Mrs. Mason has been deeply felt by many, especially her sons, Dr. William (Dr. Rosalyn) Mason and Curtis Mason; her daughters, Dr. Mildred (Jack) Whitted and Tonsie (Glen) Hickerson; her sisters, Mable Coleman and Ella Gaston; her six grandchildren; and her seven great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Mason; her granddaughter, Brenda Allen; her sisters, Hazle Johnson, Celesta Jenkins, Vera Harris, and Salina Premius; and her brother, Edgar Brookshire; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Lillie Maud Mason, and we extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lillie Maud Mason as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
