SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 were saddened to learn of the death of their former colleague,
4 Anthony Scariano of Olympia Fields, on Saturday, April 17,
5 2004; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Mr. Scariano was born in Chicago to Sicilian
7 immigrants; his parents instilled in him a sense of patriotism
8 and duty to the United States, along with an ache for the
9 traditions of his family's native land; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Mr. Scariano served in the Army's Office of
11 Strategic Services during World War II and then enrolled at
12 George Washington University, graduating in 1942; he graduated
13 from Georgetown University Law Center in 1948; he worked as an
14 assistant U.S. attorney until 1954, when he entered private
15 practice; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Mr. Scariano was passionate about justice; he
17 fought for poor people, for minorities, and for the powerless;
18 he fought for public education while serving in the House of
19 Representatives from 1956 to 1972 as State Representative of
20 the first legislative district; he was one of the sponsors of
21 the first Open Meetings Act; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Mr. Scariano was appointed chairman of the
23 Illinois Racing Board in 1972, then to the Illinois Appellate
24 Court in 1984, where he remained until his retirement in 1996;
25 and
 
26     WHEREAS, Mr. Scariano was a student of policy who enjoyed
27 opera and read extensively; in recent years, he enjoyed
28 five-mile walks through forest preserves where he listened to
29 self-recordings of Italian poetry and read Italian literature;

1     WHEREAS, The passing of Anthony Scariano has been deeply
2 felt by many, especially his wife of 61 years, Leah C. (nee
3 Vaira); his sons Anthony Jr. and John; his brothers, John
4 (Martha) and Joseph; his sister, Marie (Frank) Makowski; his
5 grandchildren, Anthony III and Leigh Christine; and his many
6 nieces, nephews, and dear friends; he was preceded in death by
7 one daughter, Mary Phyllis Scariano; therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
10 Anthony Scariano, a man who fought for justice for the
11 downtrodden, and who will be remembered for his humor and good
12 nature; and be it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to the family of Anthony Scariano as an expression of
15 our sincere condolences during their time of bereavement.
