SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Frederick "Stokie" Stokes of East St. Louis on Thursday, April 8, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stokes was born on December 19, 1937, in St. Louis, Missouri, to William and Lavondia Stokes; he attended East St. Louis public schools, graduating from Lincoln Senior High School; he attended McKendree College, where he received his bachelor of science degree; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stokes entered the U.S. armed forces and received an honorable discharge; he then was employed by McDonnell Douglas Air Craft Corp.; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stokes served as an elementary school teacher at the Charles Manners Elementary School in District 189; he retired from the district in 1994; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Frederick "Stokie" Stokes has been deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Shirley; his sons, J. Frederick Stokes, Leon (Nicki) Sims, and Larry Sims; his sisters, Gwendolyn Moore, Geneva Stokes, Judy Kelly, and Sharon (Howell) Granger; his stepsister, Shirley Holmes; his uncle, Charles Merrits Sr.; his aunts, Willa Mae Williams and Ora B. Howard; his 6 sisters-in-law and 4 brothers-in-law; and his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Frederick "Stokie" Stokes, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Frederick "Stokie" Stokes as an expression of our sincere condolences.
