SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 were saddened to learn of the death of Frances Nies Rossbach of
4 Chicago City, Minnesota, formerly a Clarendon Hills resident
5 from 1949 to 2000, on February 11, 2004; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Mrs. Rossbach was born on September 18, 1924, in
7 El Paso, Texas; she was an avid tennis player who competed in
8 numerous city tennis championships; and
 
9     WHEREAS, She received her bachelor's degree in business
10 from what is now the University of Texas El Paso in 1945, where
11 she was named Outstanding Woman Graduate; at the college, she
12 was an active member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and
13 served twice as president of the sorority alumnae group in
14 southwest suburban Chicago; and
 
15     WHEREAS, She met her future husband while he was serving
16 with the United States Army, stationed at Fort Bliss during
17 World War II; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Mrs. Rossbach was president of the Walker School
19 Parent-Teacher Association in the late 1950s and part of a
20 citizens group that introduced foreign language instruction
21 into District 181 elementary schools; and
 
22     WHEREAS, In the 1960s, she helped in the construction of
23 the Church of the Holy Nativity; she served on the church
24 vestry and was president of the Episcopal Churchwomen; she
25 mobilized support for the St. Augustine Indian Center in
26 Chicago, which enabled the center to buy its current facility;
27 she was den mother for both of her sons' Cub Scout troops and a
28 Girl Scout leader when her daughter was involved; and
 
29     WHEREAS, In the early 1960s, she led the citizens'

1 committee to build the Clarendon Hills' firehouse and the
2 referendum campaign to create the police and fire pension fund;
3 in the 1970s, she was chairman of the Clarendon Hills
4 historical committee and helped write the village's 50-year
5 history; she was also chairman of the Downers Grove Township
6 Senior Citizens Committee and was director of senior activities
7 at The Community House in Hinsdale; she taught the 55 Alive
8 Defensive Driving Course; in 1964, she and her husband were the
9 first couple to receive the Distinguished Service Award from
10 the Clarendon Hills Junior Chamber of Commerce; and
 
11     WHEREAS, The passing of Frances Nies Rossbach will be
12 deeply felt by many, especially her husband of 58 years, Paul;
13 her children, Bill, Bob, and Pamela Schmitz; her grandchildren,
14 Kyle and Emilie Schmitz, Jennifer, David, and Emily
15 Richardson-Rossbach, and Brigit and Dylan Rossbach; and her
16 sister, Emily Louis Bowden; therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
18 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
19 Frances Nies Rossbach along with all who knew and loved her and
20 extend our sincere condolences to her family and friends; and
21 be it further
 
22     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
23 presented to Frances Nies Rossbach as an expression of our
24 deepest sympathy.
