SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 were saddened to learn of the death of Thomas E. Rand of
4 Chicago on August 25, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Thomas E. Rand was an only child born in Lodi,
6 Texas to the union of Goree and Sadie Cole Rand on March 2,
7 1919; as a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and
8 Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, he proved to
9 be an astute student of business early on; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Mr. Rand settled in Chicago after a successful
11 tour of duty in which he witnessed the end of World War II as
12 Sergeant in the United States Army; his first venture was a
13 Billiard and Recreation Room at 55th and State Street in
14 Chicago during a time when opportunities and resources were
15 limited for people of color; many area businessmen impressed by
16 his work ethic and shrewd acumen sought his counsel; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Mr. Rand started to break down barriers for
18 minorities in business and as his family grew, his sons were
19 raised under a rule of uncompromised business discipline; their
20 hard work and efforts were rewarded when they became the first
21 African Americans to own a wholesale beverage company, which
22 eventually became one of the country's largest establishments;
23 from there the family's diverse holdings expanded into
24 manufacturing, food distribution, wholesale, and
25 import-export; and
 
26     WHEREAS, Mr. Rand will always be remembered for his
27 outstanding contributions to the business world at large, Civil
28 Rights, and the pursuit of equality for human justice; and
 
29     WHEREAS, The passing of Thomas E. Rand will be deeply felt
30 by many, especially his wife, Jenny; his children, Everett and

1 Timothy; his grandchildren; his nieces and nephews; and a host
2 of cousins; and
 
3     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maude;
4 and a son, Tyrone; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
6 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
7 Thomas E. Rand along with all who knew and loved him and extend
8 our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and be it
9 further
 
10     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to the family of Thomas E. Rand as an expression of
12 our deepest sympathy.
