SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of Rabbi Irving P. Glickman on Thursday, December 2, 2004; and

WHEREAS, A native of Chicago's South Side, Rabbi Glickman earned a bachelor's degree in history and mathematics from Roosevelt University in 1952, a bachelor's degree in Hebrew literature in 1955, and rabbinical ordination in 1957 from Chicago's Hebrew Theological College; he was a member of the Rabbinical Council of America; and

WHEREAS, His first rabbinical position was in Maywood; after that, he served congregations all over the continent, including Galveston, Texas; Winnipeg, Manitoba; and Louisville, Kentucky; before returning to Chicago, where he had served the Orthodox A.G. Beth Israel Congregation since 1987; he also served on many boards and committees, including as president of the Chicago Board of Rabbis, as vice president of the Chicago Rabbinical Council, and as a member of the Jewish Community Relations Committee of the Jewish United Fund; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Glickman was a very conscientious and effective representative of the Jewish community to the non-Jewish community; he was dedicated to serving people; when he faced a situation he felt was unjust, he spoke up - and people listened; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Rabbi Glickman has been deeply felt by many, especially his wife of nearly 50 years, Lee; his daughters, Linda Glickman Kirshner, Ronna Sharp, Debbie Cash, and Lori Meystel; his sons, Rick Glickman and David Glickman; his sister, Beata Rothner; his 26 grandchildren; and his one great-grandchild; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Rabbi Irving P. Glickman, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our sincere condolences.
