SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Marine Corporal Peter Giannopoulos of Inverness
3 died in action on November 11, 2004 in the Babil Province in
4 Iraq, as his unit was attacking enemy positions; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Peter graduated in 2000 from Fremd High School in
6 Palatine; he was a goaltender on the varsity ice hockey team, a
7 member of the school's model United Nations, and liked to
8 target-shoot; he was also a National Merit Scholarship
9 finalist, and wrote in his essay: "The military will sharpen
10 virtues that cannot be taught in a classroom, like honor,
11 commitment, courage, valor, and camaraderie"; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He was very committed to serving his country and
13 he enlisted when he was 17, shortly before he graduated from
14 high school; he was assigned to the Marine Corps Reserve's 2nd
15 Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, out of
16 Waukegan; he had planned to transfer to Northern Illinois
17 University from Purdue University when his unit was activated
18 in June; he had been serving in Iraq since mid-September; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Peter is survived by his parents and two younger
20 brothers; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Peter was a quiet, self-assured, and focused young
22 man; he was a Marine before he was a Marine, a hero from his
23 service and sacrifice; therefore, be it
 
24     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
25 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that together with his
26 family, friends, fellow members of the United States armed
27 forces, and the citizens of this State and this great nation,
28 we mourn the passing of Corporal Peter Giannopoulos and we
29 extend to his family our sincerest condolences; and be it
30 further

1     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
3 sympathy.
