SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Alberto S. Nieto, Ph.D., of Champaign, who passed away on August 30, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nieto was born in Tacna, Peru on June 19, 1938; he left South America to continue his education; he received his master's degree from Washington University in St. Louis; he earned his Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nieto was retained to teach in both the Civil Engineering and Geology Departments at the University of Illinois when he completed his doctorate; he taught at the University of Illinois for 30 years; he was one of only seven geotechnical engineering faculty honored with individual laboratories in the newly built geotechnical engineering addition to the Civil and Environmental Engineering building; he retired in 2000; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nieto took up painting, drawing, and sketching after his retirement; he also attended a variety of art classes at Parkland College; he enjoyed cooking meals featuring the foods of Peru; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nieto was known for being an outstanding professor and often the life of any party; he adored his grandchildren and lived to make them laugh and to make sure they knew how much they were loved; he will be remembered most as someone who shared his love and sense of humor liberally with family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nieto was preceded in death by his father, Carlos; his mother, Emilia; and his ex-wife, Lynn; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nieto is survived by his wife, Nancy Benson Nieto; his sons, Carlos and Marco; his sisters, Nanita and Melita; his grandchildren, Sofia, Nina, Mario, Enzo, and Nico; his three nieces; and his one nephew; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Alberto S. Nieto and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Nieto as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
