HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to commend Alderperson Howard B. Brookins
4Jr. on his service to the 21st Ward as a member of the Chicago
5City Council; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Ald. Brookins is the son of former Illinois
7Senator Howard B. Brookins Sr.; he graduated from Mendel
8Catholic High School and earned a degree in Mortuary Science
9from Southern Illinois University Carbondale; he earned his
10Juris Doctor from Northern Illinois University College of Law;
11he is a longtime resident of Chicago; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Prior to serving on the Chicago City Council,
13Ald. Brookins served as an Assistant Public Defender, an
14Assistant State's Attorney, and a Special Assistant Attorney
15General; he remains a practicing attorney at the Law Office of
16Howard B. Brookins Jr., PC; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Ald. Brookins was first elected to serve the 21st
18Ward as an alderperson in 2003, representing parts of Auburn
19Gresham and Washington Heights; he is currently completing his
20fifth term as one of the longest sitting members of the Chicago
21City Council, having served for 20 years by the end of this
22term; and

1    WHEREAS, While in office, Ald. Brookins has been a staple
2in the community and responsible for major economic growth and
3development within the 21st Ward; his accomplishments include
4the expansion of affordable housing, the opening of a new
5charter school, the launch of Chicago's electric scooter
6program, the opening of the 21st Ward's first Starbucks, the
7renaming of Lake Shore Drive after Jean Baptiste Point
8DuSable, one of Chicago's first non-Indigenous settlers, and
9the establishment of a reparations fund for victims of
10notorious former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge; he worked
11tirelessly to bring a Walmart Supercenter to West Chatham; he
12also served as chairman of the Committee on Economic, Capital
13and Technology Development, the Committee on Education and
14Child Development, and the Committee on Transportation and
15Public Way; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Ald. Brookins has also shown his dedication and
17commitment to the 21st Ward through hosting many community
18events, including job fairs, internship fairs, high school
19fairs, business advisory council meetings, the Annual Back to
20School Summer Picnic, the Annual 21st Ward Clean & Green, Bike
21the Hood, the Annual Senior Thanksgiving Dinners, the Annual
22Christmas Party, the Summer Music series, the Annual
23Shred-A-Thons, weekly Constituent Nights, and monthly Town
24Hall meetings; and

1    WHEREAS, Ald. Brookins has served as a member of several
2organizations, including Trinity United Church of Christ,
3Prince Hall Mason Eureka Lodge #64, the Community Media
4Workshop Board of Directors, the Northern Illinois Alumni
5Association Board of Directors, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
6Inc., and the 9100 South Union Block Club; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Ald. Brookins has expressed plans to remain
8politically active and to serve as a guide and counsel to young
9people in the 21st Ward Young Democrats organization; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Ald. Brookins is the husband of Ebonie
11Taylor-Brookins and the father of Howard B. Brookins III and
12Harihson B. Brookins; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
14HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we commend Alderperson Howard B. Brookins Jr. for his work on
16the Chicago City Council, and we thank him for his years of
17dedicated service to the people of the 21st Ward and the City
18of Chicago; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to Ald. Brookins as an expression of our esteem and
21respect.
