SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-663 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides for the issuance of Road Worker Safety license plates to qualified applicants. Provides that the plates are to be displayed on first division vehicles or on second division vehicles weighing not more than 12,000 pounds. Provides that the additional fees collected for these plates shall be deposited into the Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund and the Transportation Safety Highway Hire-back Fund.

1     AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5 Section 3-663 as follows:
 
6     (625 ILCS 5/3-663 new)
7     Sec. 3-663. Road Worker Safety license plates.
8     (a) In addition to any other special license plate, the
9 Secretary, upon receipt of all applicable fees and applications
10 made in the form prescribed by the Secretary of State, may
11 issue Road Worker Safety license plates to residents of
12 Illinois who meet eligibility requirements prescribed by the
13 Secretary of State. The special Road Worker Safety plate issued
14 under this Section shall be affixed only to passenger vehicles
15 of the first division and motor vehicles of the second division
16 weighing not more than 12,000 pounds.
17     (b) The design, color, and format of the plates shall be
18 wholly within the discretion of the Secretary of State. The
19 Secretary may, in his or her discretion, allow the plates to be
20 issued as vanity or personalized plates in accordance with
21 Section 3-405.1 of this Code. The plates are not required to
22 designate "Land Of Lincoln", as prescribed in subsection (b) of
23 Section 3-412 of this Code. The Secretary shall prescribe the
24 eligibility requirements and, in his or her discretion, shall
25 approve and prescribe stickers or decals as provided under
26 Section 3-412.
27     (c) An applicant shall be charged a $40 fee for original
28 issuance, in addition to the appropriate registration fee or
29 the fee designated in subsection (a) of Section 3-815. Of this
30 additional fee, $15 shall be deposited into the Secretary of
31 State Special License Plate Fund and $25 shall be deposited
32 into the Transportation Safety Highway Hire-back Fund.

1     For each registration renewal period, a $27 fee, in
2 addition to the appropriate registration fee or the fee
3 designated in subsection (a) of Section 3-815, shall be
4 charged. Of this additional fee, $2 shall be deposited into the
5 Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund and $25 shall be
6 deposited into the Transportation Safety Highway Hire-back
7 Fund.
