SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
110 ILCS 947/42 new

    Amends the Higher Education Student Assistance Act. Provides that any spouse or child of a disabled veteran, as determined by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, is entitled to 8 semesters or 12 quarters of full payment of tuition and mandatory fees at any public institution of higher learning in this State or the equivalent of 8 semesters or 12 quarters of payment of tuition and mandatory fees, at the rate established by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, for private institutions of higher learning in this State.

1     AN ACT concerning education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Higher Education Student Assistance Act is
5 amended by adding Section 42 as follows:
 
6     (110 ILCS 947/42 new)
7     Sec. 42. Grants for dependents of disabled veterans. Any
8 spouse, natural child, legally adopted child, or child in the
9 legal custody of a disabled veteran, as determined by the
10 United States Department of Veterans Affairs, is entitled to 8
11 semesters or 12 quarters of full payment of tuition and
12 mandatory fees at any public institution of higher learning in
13 this State for either full or part-time study or the equivalent
14 of 8 semesters or 12 quarters of payment of tuition and
15 mandatory fees, at the rate established by the Commission, for
16 private institutions of higher learning in this State, provided
17 that the recipient is maintaining satisfactory academic
18 progress. Grant recipients need not be Illinois residents at
19 the time of enrollment in order to receive the grant. The grant
20 may be used for undergraduate or graduate study. Grants under
21 this Section shall be administered by and paid out of funds
22 available to the Commission and shall accrue to the bona fide
23 applicant without the requirement of demonstrating financial
24 need to qualify for the grant.
