HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Healthy people and healthy communities are the
3 centerpiece of any strong and vibrant society; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Americans from the State of Illinois are amongst
5 the most generous people in the world; and
 
6     WHEREAS, ONE billion people live on less than $1 a day; and
 
7     WHEREAS, ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History is a new
8 effort by Americans to rally Americans - ONE by ONE - to fight
9 the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty; and
 
10     WHEREAS, ONE is students and ministers, punk rockers and
11 NASCAR moms, Americans of all beliefs and persuasions, united
12 as ONE to help make poverty history; and
 
13     WHEREAS, ONE believes that allocating an additional ONE
14 percent of the U.S. budget toward providing basic needs like
15 health, education, clean water, and food would transform the
16 futures and hopes of an entire generation in the world's
17 poorest countries; and
 
18     WHEREAS, ONE also calls for debt cancellation, trade
19 reform, and anti-corruption measures in a comprehensive
20 package to help Africa and the poorest nations beat AIDS and
21 extreme poverty; and
 
22     WHEREAS, A pact directing support for basic needs -
23 education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans -
24 would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation
25 in the poorest countries; and
 
26     WHEREAS, ONE is an unprecedented bipartisan political
27 movement in American history and part of a fast-growing global

1 movement to make poverty history; therefore, be it
 
2     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
4 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we proclaim our community to be
5 A State of ONE in Illinois and encourage everyone to recognize
6 the devastating impact poverty and AIDS have had around the
7 world and take action to bring about change.
