HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of this Body are honored to recognize significant milestones in the lives of the people of this State; and

WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Grace Mae (White) Harrell is celebrating the 100th anniversary of her birth; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Harrell was born on June 16, 1906, to Louella Mae and Ira Edward White in Haines Township, Marion County; she is the second of 17 children; and

WHEREAS, She worked in factories all her life, starting at about age 14; she worked in the Sexton garment factory in Salem and later at the dress factory in Salem; she finally went to work in the shoe factory, where she retired at the age of 65; and

WHEREAS, Grace married Orin (Ted) Harrell, and they lived in Odin their entire married life; Ted died in 1983, and Mrs. Harrell continued to reside in Odin until 2002, when she moved to Great Oaks Boarding Home in Salem; she is a member of the Odin Methodist Church and attended regularly until she went to the boarding home; and

WHEREAS, In her younger days, Mrs. Harrell loved to sew, quilt, crochet, and do embroidery work and was an excellent cook; she and Ted especially enjoyed attending dances together; and

WHEREAS, She can recite long poems and has a wonderful sense of humor; when the weather is nice, Mrs. Harrell enjoys walking around outside of the boarding home; she is a thoughtful, considerate person with a good sense of humor and has always been a hard worker; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Harrell's son, Frederick Cecil Hazlet, the joy of her life, passed away in 2002; and

WHEREAS, A reception will be held in her honor on Friday, June 16, 2006, at 2 p.m.; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Grace Mae Harrell on the occasion of her 100th birthday, and we extend to her our sincere best wishes for the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to her as an expression of our respect and esteem.
