HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, A "developmental disability" is defined as a
3 disorder caused by mental retardation, cerebral palsy,
4 epilepsy, autism, or any other condition which results in
5 impairment similar to that of mental retardation; a
6 developmental disability originates before the age of 18 and is
7 expected to continue indefinitely; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Approximately 1.5 percent of the U.S. population
9 is afflicted with a developmental disability or mental
10 retardation; due to the early onset and debilitating nature of
11 these disorders, many more children are affected than adults;
12 and
 
13     WHEREAS, One of the main purposes of the Knights of
14 Columbus, a fraternal order with 1.7 million members around the
15 world, is to support various charitable causes that seek to
16 make our families and communities stronger; it has donated $1
17 billion and volunteered 400 million hours of service in the
18 past decade; and
 
19     WHEREAS, The Illinois State Council of the Knights of
20 Columbus will hold their 37th Annual Fund Drive for the Mental
21 Retardation/Learning Disabilities Program from September
22 15-19, 2006, distributing the funds they raise to more than 300
23 organizations throughout Illinois; therefore, be it
 
24     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
25 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
26 we proclaim September 15-19, 2006 as "Helping Citizens with
27 Developmental Disabilities Days" in Illinois, and encourage
28 all citizens to contribute what they can to assist the people
29 that are afflicted with these terrible disorders; and be it
30 further

1     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to the Illinois State Council of the Knights of
3 Columbus as an expression of our esteem.
