HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois are pleased to recognize the Chicago State
4 University (CSU) Foundation on the occasion of its 12th Annual
5 Friends of CSU Awards Dinner; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The CSU Foundation is a private nonprofit
7 corporation with assets of nearly $3 million and an endowment
8 nearing $2 million; it was chartered in 1967 and incorporated
9 in December of 1968 as an independent, charitable, organization
10 to secure, hold, and administer funds and properties given by
11 individuals, corporations, and philanthropic foundations in
12 support of Chicago State University and its affiliated
13 organizations; such gifts provide needed funds for
14 scholarships, fellowships, faculty development, academic
15 programs and research, modern equipment and more, initiatives
16 for which state general operating funds are often not
17 available; and
 
18     WHEREAS, The Foundation seeks private support for purposes
19 particularly central to the teaching, research, and service
20 mission of the university; with state funds accounting for less
21 than 50 percent of the actual cost of a CSU education, funds
22 raised by the Foundation are the margin of excellence in
23 providing undergraduate and graduate instruction and basic and
24 applied research and program outreach and support that benefits
25 students, faculty, and the greater world community; and
 
26     WHEREAS, Chicago State University is Illinois' oldest and
27 most successful higher education institution assisting
28 minorities; originally named Cook County Normal School, CSU was
29 founded in Blue Island in 1867; the Chicago Board of Education
30 purchased the school in 1897 and renamed it Chicago Normal
31 School; in 1913, it became Chicago Normal College, and in 1938,
32 it was renamed Chicago Teachers College; the college was

1 acquired in 1965 by the State of Illinois, and reflecting a
2 broadening of the college's curriculum and an evolution towards
3 becoming a liberal arts institution, the school was renamed
4 Chicago State College in 1965 and then Chicago State University
5 in 1971; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8 we recognize the Chicago State University (CSU) Foundation on
9 the occasion of its 12th Annual Friends of CSU Awards Dinner;
10 and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to the CSU Foundation as an expression of our esteem.
