HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of this Body are honored to recognize significant milestones in the lives of the people of this State; and

WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Estella Smith of Chicago is celebrating the 100th anniversary of her birth; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was born on July 31, 1906, in Donaldsonville, Georgia, and raised in Apalachicola, Florida; and

WHEREAS, She later moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where she met and married Eugene Smith, a Pullman Porter who resided in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith is the proud mother of three children, Mary Ella, Richard, and Edward, whom she stayed home to raise; while they were growing up, she participated in their school and church activities; she has been a faithful member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church since 1941; and

WHEREAS, Because of her sweet and loving personality, she has become a second mom to many of her children's friends, including the late Mayor Harold Washington, with whom she had a very special relationship; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith is the grandmother of six, Gregory, Tracye, Sharon, Ryan, Michael, and Dionne, and the great-grandmother of four, Hasani, Jelani, Clayton, and Donna; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Mrs. Estella Smith on the occasion of her 100th birthday, and we extend to her our sincere best wishes for the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Smith as an expression of our respect and esteem.
