HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois are pleased to recognize the Reverend Dr.
4 Albert Sampson on the occasion of the 50 Year International
5 Celebration honoring his ministry; and
 
6     WHEREAS, He was born in Everett, Massachusetts, and
7 graduated from Everett High School; he felt the strong call to
8 enter the ministry and was licensed to preach in his home
9 church of Emmanuel Baptist in Malden, Massachusetts; and
 
10     WHEREAS, He earned a B.A. degree in religion and social
11 science from Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina; he
12 received his master's degree in cultural studies in 1973 from
13 Governors State University in University Park; his Master of
14 Divinity degree in 1977 from McCormick Theological Seminary in
15 Chicago; and his Doctorate in Divinity from Union Baptist
16 Theological Seminary in Toledo, Ohio; and
 
17     WHEREAS, While he was a student at Shaw University, he was
18 President of the student body, President of the Shaw University
19 NAACP, and President of the Youth and College Chapters of the
20 NAACP in North Carolina; he and students from other college
21 campuses were selected to be state legislators and introduced
22 the first public accommodations bill in North Carolina history;
23 he also initiated and led the voter registration and political
24 education drive leading to the election of the first
25 African-American city councilman in North Carolina, John
26 Winters; and
 
27     WHEREAS, As Executive Director of the Atlanta branch of the
28 NAACP, Reverend Dr. Sampson was a change agent in the movement
29 for school desegregation in Atlanta; he joined the Southern
30 Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1962 and was selected
31 to be Assistant Director of Affiliates and Chapters of the

1 SCLC; he was selected to study community organizing under the
2 late Saul Alinsky at The Woodlawn Organization (TWO) in
3 Chicago; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Reverend Sampson was the SCLC Project Director
5 under Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., playing a critically
6 important role in the campaign for the election of Carl Stokes,
7 the first African-American mayor of a major U.S. city,
8 Cleveland, Ohio; and
 
9     WHEREAS, When Dr. King sought to fix affordable housing
10 issues in America, he appointed Reverend Dr. Sampson as the
11 National Housing Director of the SCLC; he was the only member
12 of the (SCLC) staff to be personally ordained by Reverend Dr.
13 King at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1966;
14 and
 
15     WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Sampson is now the founder and
16 president of Farmers Agribusiness Resource Management (FARM),
17 Former President of the Metropolitan Area Council of Black
18 Churches in Chicago, Former President of the Neighborhood
19 Social Entrepreneurs Society (NSET), and President of the Metro
20 Area African American Seniors Resource Network; he also served
21 as a Board Member of one of the largest African-American-owned
22 banks in America; he is Chairman of the Worldwide African
23 Ancestors Society and Publisher of the Black Express News; and
 
24     WHEREAS, He has served as Chaplain of the World Conference
25 of Mayors and The National Association of Real Estate Brokers
26 (NAREB); in 2006, he was selected by President George W. Bush
27 and the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community
28 Initiatives to address the second annual White House National
29 Conference on Faith-Based and Community Initiatives
30 Conference; and
 
31     WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Sampson is named in "The Original

1 African Heritage Study Bible" published by Winston-Derrick
2 Publishing Company as a distinguished Biblical Scholar and
3 Theological Consultant; he has appeared in thousands of media
4 outlets such as "Esquire" and "Ebony" magazines, the New York
5 Times, the Chicago Tribune, and USA TODAY; he is also featured
6 in the History Makers DVD series as a "Living Legend"; his
7 Biography is recognized in Gale Group's "Who's Who in Black
8 America"; and
 
9     WHEREAS, A 50 Year International Celebration honoring the
10 ministry of the Reverend Dr. Albert Sampson is planned for
11 Saturday, October 21, 2006; therefore, be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14 we honor the ministry of the Reverend Dr. Albert Sampson, and
15 we thank him for the many years he has dedicated to serving his
16 fellow people; and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to Reverend Dr. Sampson as an expression of our
19 esteem.
