HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, 2005 marks the 25th year that Project Education
3 Plus (PEP) has been serving the young people, disadvantaged
4 families, children, and senior citizens of the Cabrini-Green
5 Near North area; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1980, the purpose of PEP
7 has been to divert the anger, frustration, and negative
8 attitudes of youth of the Cabrini-Green Near North area into
9 positive learning experiences and constructive activities; and
 
10     WHEREAS, It's mission is to enlighten youth on how to take
11 advantage of the educational, technological, and recreational
12 outlets in society and transfer that knowledge into a
13 successful self-sufficient life; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Through the Louise Rhine Seniors Program, PEP has
15 branched out to meet the needs of senior citizens residing in
16 Cabrini-Green housing and in the surrounding Near North area;
17 the purpose of this program is to give seniors a socializing
18 base and some activities to do, rather than being shut in; the
19 seniors meet to plan activities, field trips, fundraisers, and
20 social events; during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays,
21 seniors are treated to dinner and baskets of holiday items for
22 their families; these activities also serve as an
23 intergenerational component of PEP; and
 
24     WHEREAS, Another component of PEP is the SMART Program,
25 which is designed to provide academic enrichment to youth,
26 teens, and adults in the community, and includes an
27 after-school program, a technology program, a summer math and
28 science camp, a high school and college mentoring program, and
29 a recreational program; and
 
30     WHEREAS, One of the highlights of the recreational program

1 is the Chicago Demons Basketball Program for boys and girls;
2 teams participate in city, regional, and national tournaments
3 and have visited many major universities as part of their
4 travels; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Vince Carter is the founder and executive director
6 of PEP; he also works as a Chicago Public Schools teacher and
7 is the head basketball coach at Von Steuben High School;
8 therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11 we congratulate Project Education Plus (PEP) and Vince Carter,
12 founder of PEP, on the occasion of the organization's 25th
13 anniversary; and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
15 presented to Project Education Plus and to Vince Carter as an
16 expression of our respect and esteem and with best wishes for
17 the continued success of such an outstanding organization.
