HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Five individuals and one team were inducted into
3 the Centralia Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday, December 27,
4 2005, including Bob Bogle, Teena Magoulias-Shafer, Larry
5 Smith, Fay Vaccaro, Ron Wimpy, and the 1954-55 Centralia Junior
6 College basketball team; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Bob Bogle had a 189-93 record as head boys'
8 basketball coach and athletic director at Centralia High School
9 and led the Orphans to 20-win seasons five times, including
10 trips to the Sweet 16 in 1988 and 1993; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Teena Magoulias-Shafer, a standout athlete as
12 well as a coach, teacher, mentor and friend to many of
13 Centralia's female athlete was a coach in four sports at
14 Centralia Junior High School for 29 seasons, with a 287-125
15 record as softball coach and an 82-16 record and two Southern
16 Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association titles as head
17 girls' basketball coach; she remains active as head coach of
18 the St. Mary's Lady Cardinals basketball team; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Larry Smith, a retired baseball coach at Kaskaskia
20 College, had more than 800 wins to his credit in a 36-year
21 coaching career; a total of 15 Blue Devils in Mr. Smith's
22 tenure signed professional baseball contracts, and three of
23 those, Larry Mohme, Bryan Eversgerd, and current Baltimore
24 Orioles reliever Aaron Rakers, ended up playing in the Major
25 Leagues; and
 
26     WHEREAS, Fay Vaccaro, this year's V.I.P. Award winner, was
27 an outstanding fast-pitch softball pitcher; she pitched for the
28 Centralia Paydays from 1956 to 1962, coached the girls'
29 softball team at St. Mary's School from 1960 to 1982, and was a
30 coach and mentor for many of Centralia's female athletes,
31 including Ms. Magoulias-Shafer; Ms. Vaccaro also became known

1 as an outstanding bowler; and
 
2     WHEREAS, Ron Wimpy was a two-team sports captain at
3 Centralia Township High School who played both football and
4 basketball in the final season of A.L. Trout's long and
5 distinguished coaching career at CTHS and whose game-winning
6 basket in a 1951 game ended the Mt. Vernon Rams' 46-game
7 winning streak; and
 
8     WHEREAS, The 1954-55 Centralia Junior College basketball
9 team, coached by Sports Hall of Fame member Chuck Mundell, had
10 a 20-5 record and won the Central Illinois Conference
11 championship while ranking in the top 10 nationally in scoring
12 with an average of 91 points per game; therefore, be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15 we congratulate each of the 2005 inductees of the Centralia
16 Sports Hall of Fame; and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to each inductee as an expression of our esteem.
