HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Helen Portia Kelly of Chicago on September 10, 2004; and

WHEREAS, She was born September 22, 1919 in Nashville, Tennessee, the first born of Ethel Johnson Kelly and Cato Kelly; and

WHEREAS, Her parents moved to Chicago when she was a young child and her elementary education began in Chicago; after her parents separated, she went to live in Clarksville, Tennessee with her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Kelly; she completed her formal education in Clarksville, after which she attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee where her mother lived; she later returned to Chicago and attended the University of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, She married Richard A. Griffin on November 5, 1953; they loved to travel and spent much of their married life traveling around the world, living a full and happy life; and

WHEREAS, Her sister, her only sibling, preceded her in death; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Helen Portia Kelly is felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her devoted and loving husband, Richard; her cousins, nieces, and nephews; and her many friends and church family; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Helen Portia Kelly along with all who knew and loved her and we extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to her family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
