SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with sadness of the death of John F. Whiteside of
4 Joliet on Saturday, January 22, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born in Vienna, and was a longtime Joliet
6 area resident; he was a graduate of Northern Illinois
7 University, Joliet Junior College, and Vienna High School; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Mr. Whiteside was a United States Air Force
9 veteran and a featured columnist at the Joliet Herald News,
10 where he started his career as a beat reporter in 1971; and
 
11     WHEREAS, He was the recipient of many awards throughout his
12 outstanding career at the Joliet Herald News, including the
13 2001 Governor's Hometown Award for his first place Taylor Pirc
14 Police Video Camera Project, the 1981 Illinois Journalist of
15 the Year Award, and the Will County Sheriff's Department 2004
16 Lifetime Achievement Award; the Joliet Area Historical Museum
17 War Heroes Gallery was named in his honor; he received an
18 Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad Certificate
19 of Appreciation for support in establishing the honor guard,
20 and a resolution was passed by the House of Representatives on
21 November 19, 2004 honoring his long service to the Herald News
22 and the Joliet Community; and
 
23     WHEREAS, The passing of John F. Whiteside has been deeply
24 felt by many, especially his loving wife of 39 years, Mary Jane
25 (nee Wharton) Whiteside; his daughter, Shelley Ann Whiteside;
26 his mother, Jane Hill; his brothers, Jerry (Katrina) Whiteside
27 and Allan (Mary Ann) Hill; his sister, Sue (Dr. David) Ray; his
28 stepsisters, Greta (Ed) Chitwood and Gloria (Homer) Baker; and
29 his numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; he was preceded in
30 death by his father, Sherman Whiteside; his beloved
31 grandmother, Lula Whiteside; his Aunt Mary Whiteside; his Aunt

1 Martha Koehler; and his loving stepfather, Robert C. Hill;
2 therefore, be it
 
3     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
4 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
5 John F. Whiteside, who exemplified the highest ideals of
6 journalism and community responsibility, and we extend our
7 sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
8 and loved him; and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
11 sympathy.
